In January 2016, Tiny WPA moved into a collaborative community-focused workshop—shared with Public Workshop and People’s Emergency Center (PEC) Neighborhood Time Exchange artist residency program—along Lancaster Avenue in West Philadelphia. An immediate goal of the workshop is to deeply integrate Tiny WPA and its Building Hero Project into the community and civic development of the Promise Zone.

The storefront serves as mechanisms for catalyzing community capacity, supporting a significant local desire to ‘build’ and stimulating new public space improvement projects. This idea stems from our past and current work with PEC, specifically design-building a community message board and a mini-park/playground on Lancaster. During these community-led improvement projects, we were overwhelmed by the number of people who wanted to build and revitalize their neighborhood.
